“Don’t
start,” he said.
“I
didn’t.”
There
was silence.
She
lit another cigarette.
“What
are we going to do?” she asked, exhaling.
“About
what?” He wasn’t facing her.
“About
us.”
He
turned around.
“I
don’t think now is the time.”
“I
think it is,” she said.
“Linsey.”
“TJ
just be honest with yourself and with me. You know you can talk to me any time
about anything. So if you think we should just keep this as a friend thing, you
gotta let me know. ‘Cause it’s driving me crazy how you’re being. You hardly
look at me and when you do I get the eye roll. And when you talk to me its
either, ‘don’t start’ or ‘shut up.’ Just give it to me straight.”
“Straight?”
he asked her.
She
nodded.
“Straight
is, I don’t know what we’re going to do. I know I love you. Can’t that be
enough?” He ran his hand over his head. “Why can’t it be enough that I don’t
hold any of this against you? And that I love you? That should be enough,
because it’s all I have.”
“But
I…” she started.
He
cut her off.
“No,
Linsey, no buts.” He reached for her. “That’s all I can give you now. I love
you and that’s that.”
“Then
that’s enough,” she said.
